Dear participant/Student
I would like to ask you to participate in the data collection for a work-based study into the use of an electronic Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ). For the purposes of this work-based study the questionnaire will be used to discover how you are experiencing teaching sessions. Its usefulness is underlined by the experience that student responses often differ markedly from what teachers have expected on the basis of their own feelings in the classroom (Brookfield 1995: 95-96).
The CIQ requires you to answer five
questions that describe aspects of teaching sessions, prompting teachers to
think about what is helping or hindering their learning so far. Your responses
are anonymous and you are encouraged to keep a copy too for review at the end
of the course and for your own records. You will be asked to complete the CIQ at
the end of each class and are the same every week.
Brookfield began giving students a
voice, in this particular way, in the era of carbon paper! But nowadays the
facilities available to us include electronic mail and virtual learning
environments. Therefore, we will be asking you to submit your electronic CIQ to
the specific CIQ page on the course blog.
Your participation in this work-based study
is entirely voluntary. Filling in the survey will take no more than 5 minutes. The
information you provide is confidential. All of your CIQ responses are
anonymous and therefore no participant’s names will be used. If you request
confidentiality, beyond anonymised quotes, information you provide will be
treated only as a source of background information, alongside literature-based
research and potential interviews with other participants.
Your name or any other personal identifying information will not appear in any publications resulting from this study. The information gained from this interview will only be used for the above objectives, will not be used for any other purpose and will not be recorded in excess of what is required for the research.
Even though the study findings will be published in a Thesis, international conferences and journals, only relevant researchers will have access to the anonymous CIQ responses. These researchers will be bound by the principles outlined above. There are no known or anticipated risks to you as a participant in this work-based study.
If you have any questions regarding this study or would like additional information please contact the work-based study researcher (p.smith7@unimail.derby.ac.uk).
By filling in the CIQ (every occasion) you indicate that you understand its purpose and consent to the use of the data as indicated above. This is a completely voluntary request and should you decide not to complete the CIQ at any point during the work-based study, the data you have already entered up to that point will be used.
Thank you for your cooperation

1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?
4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
1. When we were learning about the rule of six I felt most engaged as it was really interesting and we got involved.
ReplyDelete2. When the class gives loads of other tim examples and go off topic I feel most distanced.
3. Watching clips through and talking about how they could be improved was most affirming for me.
4. It was most confusing when we go off topic.
5. What surprised me was how badly Spiderman 3 is actually appears to be edited when you apply the six rules.
1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
ReplyDeleteWhen we were all discussing the importance of certain rules from the 6 rules and why we placed one above another.
2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
Beginning of the lesson in the morning when we were having issues logging in.
3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?
Finding out that the teacher seemed to agree with my reasoning for certain editing choices, what could be removed, etc.
4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
Somebody had placed one of the 6 rules at the highest priority, when I had them low on my list, but I understand that the importance is subjective.
5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
That the teacher and I agreed completely on what we would remove from the movie that we were editing in class.
1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
ReplyDelete-Editing session. Engaged well with editing the Spiderman2 clips; free to edit.
Murch's video and history/rule of six was interesting too. Nice to learn a professional perspective.
2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
Didnt feel distanced as such rather than disengaged with the theme of the spiderman rearrange as i wanted to continue editing. seemed obvious which sections were to be re-edited.
3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?
The editing session i found helpful as im hoping to create a short piece that is accompanied by music and needs the pace and edit of the film to fit with the sound. Murchs rules will help me with that.
4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
Slow pace start up. Isnt hard to control a slideshow.
5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
Didnt feel surprised as such this session. Felt more confident with the editing at least.

ReplyDelete1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
ReplyDeleteI think the afternoon session was good. I liked the activity where we watched the clips from spiderman and talked about how it was edited as it gave everyone the chance to say how they would do it differently.
2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
Just in the morning because of they situation with the computers failing to log in.
3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?
I think its helpful as everyone gets their opinion across, I also think that the creation of this blog is helpful as their are lots of resources to look back on which will hopefully help my terrible memory.
4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
I don't think I was really confused by anything today.
5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
I think the spider man activity surprised me, it was surprising to find out that such big films get away with such bad editing choices.
1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening? When we watched the videos of spiderman 3 which made me understand more.
ReplyDelete2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening? When rule of six was introduced, because at first i didnt understand it
3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful? With the showing examples of the clips and pointing out the examples
4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling? when we was told to re-edit the clips because i didn't no what it is we was supposed to do and what i was looking for.
5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.) Nothing really suprised me but i didnt no there was a rule of 6 to start with.
1. When we were learning about the rule of six I felt most engaged as it was really interesting and we got involved.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed todays lesson it was something different to what i have learnt in other media units. I didnt have a clue about what rule six was and how it was important in films.
2. When the class gives loads of other tim examples and go off topic I feel most distanced.I disagree with this beacause we are all working as a group and its quite good if someone has different opinions to my one so it gives me more thoughts and ideas.
3. Watching clips through and talking about how they could be improved was most affirming for me. Yeah when i was watching the Clips i found them really funny because some of the scenes are so crap they need to be cut out. It just doesnt fit in with the clip. It really annoyed me.
4. It was most confusing when we go off topic. To me it was not i found it interesting
5. What surprised me was how badly Spiderman 3 is actually appears to be edited when you apply the six rules. Its soo better when we apply the six rules because some of the scenes are pointless. For example in one of the scenes the photographers are just stood there taking shots of nothing while there is not any action going on in the background. So why are they taking photos for. I am so glad i have cut the scene out and re done it.
Reply
1. Discussing how editing by the Six Rules can be applied to a film in order to improve the emotional and character developments and pay-offs. Plus, the discussion of the opening sequence of Apocalypse Now!
ReplyDelete2. Most distanced when we started trying to put the Six Rules into practice. However, this situation quickly improved
3. The tutor's points of view in regards to the re-edited clips in regards to the Six Rules; helps me challenge my own understanding (or lack, thereof) and fuel my own views
4. I didn't generally find anything confusing...Apart from the tutor's sense of humour ;)
5. I was most surprised at the fact that Walter Murch formulated the Six Rules and furthermore, it was initially surprising how he ranked them in terms of importance. Very informative!
ReplyDelete1. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most engaged with what was happening?
I felt that I engaged most within the lesson when we were editing freely and were able to play with the footage, I felt that with the knowledge from the presentation that I could edit better and this gave me the chance to try it out on some footage.
2. At what moment in the class this week did you feel most distanced from what was happening?
I felt distanced mostly when we were watching 180 degree rule. No fault of anyone I just really studied the 180 degree rule and have studied it previously heavily, but I felt that the examples were good and I am happy if it was useful to the class.
3. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find most affirming and helpful?
I felt that the use of the film example worked well and this helped engage us and also gave us the chance to experiment with the footage taken from Spider man 3 in our own way and then this was tied back to the parts that he had shown and he had recut himself.
4. What action that anyone (teacher or student) took in class this week did you find the most confusing puzzling?
I found it puzzling that the lesson was planned out to include both learning the 6 rules outlined by Murch and then instantly recap this by working on an edit of a real film, I wouldn't of thought of doing that, I think it worked exceptionally well and helped me completely understand the different rules and their importance in film. I feel that I took in the information and an now use these rules in the future.
5. What about the class this week surprised you the most? (This could be something about your own reactions to what went on, or something that someone did, or anything else that occurs to you.)
I was really surprised by the order of the 6 rules, I would have done it in a different order, I also was surprised by the variety of answers given on the order of the 6 rules from the other class members. It helped to teach me that everyone edits different and that every editor is unique. I think this has beneficial and has helped me this lesson as I think I will in future be able to trust my instincts on editing.
